Who knew it was going to be this tough? I had some anxious moments after college and thought, "That party's over. Now what?" It's a whole different world after college and a lot of us are trying to find some way to hang on to the only way of life we've ever known. Growing up happens, though. Every time I think I have this adulting thing down, something new comes along to slap me in the face. Here are some of the adulting changes you can look forward to, so you're not as surprised as I was. Food's Just Not the Same College life meant a lot of late night pizza, ramen noodles and as much junk food as you could fit in. And, don't forget the binge drinking. It's different now. An adult binges on Netflix not booze. An adult eats for health, not convenience. Grow to love those veggie burgers. I admit, it's an acquired tasted, but so is a lot of adulthood. (continue...) Speaking of Booze...
Also gone are the days when you drank all night, dealt with a one-day hangover and drank some more. Hangovers last a lot longer when you're an adult. Plan on two days at least with a lingering headache for who knows how long? Your drink of choice will also change. Beer and cheap liquor is now replaced with wine. In fact, you may find yourself collecting wine, searching for the finest vintage - and the list goes on. Moving Out of Your Parents' House Your mom gives you strange looks and you hear Dad making plans to turn your room into a den. You moved right back home after college, but your parents are sending clear signals that it's time you moved on. And, you know what that means, right? You actually have to pay to live somewhere. Before you start looking for a place, be warned - rent is NOT cheap. Not by any means. You may find yourself sharing a small space with lots of roommates. Now that's a familiar feeling. What's a "Real" Job? Now that you have to pay for a place to live, you also need a job. Turns out that delivering pizza doesn't pay a lot. You went to college so you could find a great job, but it seems like great jobs in your field are few and far between. Instead of finding a great job, settle for a real job. It probably won't be your dream job, but it's the adult thing to do. Here Come the Bills Guess what happens after you get a job and move out? Bills. They seem to appear out of nowhere. You have to pay for your own car insurance and maintenance, rent, utility bills and if you're like most of us, you have to make student loan payments. That doesn't count the money you need for food and clothes. You may actually have to go back to eating ramen noodles for a while. Paying bills is one of the worst parts of adulting. And, it never ends. You're Starting a What? Probably the most life changing charge into adulting you'll ever make is starting a family. A committed relationship and parenting brings a whole set of new experiences, whether you're ready for them or not. If you haven't gotten this adulting thing down yet, you'll have no choice now. Sleepless nights, constant vigils, worry, hope and joy - now that's adulting.
